The Rubber Banned is a project based on the vibrations of the universe, sound, consciousness & coincidence. It is due to the collision of orbits that the four members collaborated on these recordings, pulling on their own diverse musical journeys.

The brainchild behind the idea was Shanks Putwain (Hang Drum & Percussion). He met Cleveland Watkiss while studying at the University of Westminster where Cleveland was lecturing. Shanks made contact again recently and they discussed the possibility of recording together.

By coincidence, Ash tracked Shanks down online at about the same time. The pair had met at high school and hand’t seen one another since 1986. They met up again in Feb 2012 and discussed the missing years, kids, music, stories, ideas and life as well as the offer by Ash to record & produce Shanks’ Hang Drum. This conversation made the connection between Ash & Cleveland as they had worked on Cleveland’s debut album ‘Green Chimneys’ in 1987.

Shanks had known John Mayer (Sitar) for some time, having done many corporate gigs together. Conversations had always led to the possibility of a recorded collaboration, which came to fruition on May 13th 2012 at a studio in Acton, London. Remember this was the first time the four had been together.

What was played & recorded is the core of what you’ll hear on this album. Percussion was later added and as were textures to a number of the tracks by the wonderful Andy Davies (Trumpet & Flugelhorn), Larry Bartley (Double Bass) and Ivan Hussey (Cello).

The work can best be described by terms used by the collaborators: Silence, Frequency, Space, Feeling, Improvisation, The Moment, Freedom, Release, Tranquility, Fragility, rhythms and sounds

What they have created is something more of a sketch than a song, but more of a song than an imprompt jam. The pieces of music do have form and the running order of these songs take you on a journey about life that has the power to calm.

‘SILENCE INTERRUPTED’ - We hope you enjoy.
